Which actives not to mix on the same evening

Most irritation comes not from one product but from a combination. The pairings to avoid.
Acid and retinoid
This is the most problematic pairing. Both accelerate cell turnover; together they almost always exceed the barrier's ability to keep up.
The answer is not to give either up, but to alternate: acid one night, retinoid another, never both.

Two “different” exfoliants
An acid toner at night and a physical scrub the next day is two exfoliations in two days. Skin does not distinguish between methods: it counts the aggressions.
One type of exfoliation, once or twice a week, is enough in nearly every case.

What pairs well
Hyaluronic acid and niacinamide combine with almost anything. Ceramides and panthenol support the barrier and make other actives better tolerated.
The general rule: one “strong” active per evening, surrounded by soothing products. Less exciting to describe, but it is what produces results over three months.
