Washing clothes without wearing them out early

The machine damages more than wearing. Four settings that double a garment's life.
Temperature first
30°C is enough for a garment worn for a day. Above that, fibres slacken and colours dull wash after wash.
Stains should be treated locally before washing: far more effective than a high temperature applied to the whole garment.

Spinning, the quiet culprit
It is what distorts shoulders, sets creases and tires seams. Reducing the speed lengthens drying but preserves the cut.
On a flowing or embroidered garment, a low spin and flat drying radically change how it holds up over time.

Inside out, in a bag
Turning a garment inside out protects the visible face from rubbing against the drum. A wash bag stops embroidery or lace catching.
Finally, less detergent: an excess leaves residue that stiffens fibres and makes fabric look dull sooner.
