Wide trousers: the proportions that work
A badly adjusted length ruins a perfect piece. Three simple markers for balance.
The hem decides everything
Wide trousers should graze the top of the shoe, without breaking or exposing the ankle. Too long they drag and weigh down; too short they cut the line.
Since heel height changes this setting, choose the length for the shoes you will most often wear with them.
Balancing volume
Volume below, structure above. A tucked flowing shirt or a fitted top is enough to balance; two stacked volumes make the waist disappear.
If the top is loose, marking the waist — even slightly — restores the proportion.
Fabric makes the drape
A fluid fabric falls straight and lengthens. A stiff one keeps volume horizontal and visually widens.
It is also why the same model can look very different from one composition to another — the cut never explains everything.
