Reducing returns: what happens before the sale

Most returns come from a badly set expectation, not a product fault. Three concrete levers.
Describe measurements, not size
The same “M” label varies enormously between manufacturers. Publishing real flat measurements — shoulders, chest, length — removes a large share of size-related returns.
For a flowing garment, state the composition too: it determines whether the piece falls straight or clings.

Honest photographs
An over-retouched photo mechanically generates returns on delivery. Showing the fabric close up and the colour in natural light costs a minute and saves a return parcel.
The same logic applies to cosmetics: showing the real size avoids the disappointment of a smaller bottle than imagined.
Set the expectation out loud
“You will feel a comfort difference within a week; for the dark spots, count two months” — that sentence prevents the day-fifteen complaint.
A realistic expectation set before purchase turns a disappointed customer into a patient one — and that is the difference between a return and a repurchase.
